Queen’s Baton LARC! Splashdown

“It’s like polishing your shoes for a special occasion!” said LARCman Neil Mergard about the mammoth task undertaken in the lead up to the Queen’s Baton arriving at LARC! Headquarters.

LARCman Neil and his LARCanic crew have been sanding and lovingly re-painting the Sir Joseph Banks, one of their two iconic pink LARC! vessels, in readiness for its appearance on the international stage. This ‘polishing’ of the LARCs only occurs every five years or more, so the milestone visit of the Queen’s Baton was worth the effort.

LARC! vessel, the Sir Joseph Banks, which is fondly known amongst the LARC! crew as “The Bansky,” transported Baton bearer Maxine Brushe across Roundhill Creek and along the shores of Eurimbula National Park. The short LARC! journey in Bustard Bay signifies the connection the community has with the Commonwealth, being that the Town of 1770 is the  Birthplace of Queensland. Maxine enjoyed her LARC! ride whilst clinging to the Batton in the company of her family.

The Queens Baton journeyed through Queensland with its final destination arriving at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony where Prince Charles read the Queens message. Prince Charles had the pleasure of visiting nearby Lady Elliot Island after the opening ceremony on the Gold Coast.
